The XX UK programme presents works for clarinet and piano by British composers of the 20th century. It explores the stylistic diversity of the era: from late Romanticism to modern and jazz-influenced idioms, all within a geographically focused framework.

Gerald Finzi’s Five Bagatelles, composed in 1942, have become part of the standard clarinet repertoire and reflect the melodic and approachable musical language of their time.

Malcolm Arnold’s Sonatina (1951) is one of his most popular instrumental works: vivid, humorous, and direct.

Joseph Horovitz’s Sonatina (1981) brings rhythmic vitality and elements of jazz.

Arthur Bliss’s Pastoral is an equally compelling work. This rarely performed early piece, dedicated to the composer’s brother who died in the First World War, captivates with its formal simplicity and emotional depth.
